In 1775 Hugo O’ Connor established the Tucson Presidio and in 1776 Spanish settlers arrived.  This is what most people consider the beginning of Tucson although the area is believed to have been continuously inhabited for the last 12,000 years.   With historic places like the Hotel Congress and the St. Augustine Cathedral, downtown retains it’s history while simultaneously moving into the future with the Rio Nuevo Project.

Rio Nuevo is a locally and federally sponsored, voter approved,  revitalization project for downtown Tucson.  It includes the construction of a Civic and Cultural Plaza which includes a Science Center, historical museums, and many things yet to be announced. There are also plans to create unique shopping and entertainment experiences, expanding on an already active entertainment district. The historic Fox Theatre reopened it’s doors after an extensive renovation – see  http://www.foxtucsontheatre.org/

Downtown is home to the oldest homes in Tucson.  It’s not uncommon  to see houses from the 1890’s go for sale in Armory Park.  If you like historic neighborhoods they are all around, stretching in every direction.   Armory Park, El Presidio,  West University, and the Iron Horse Neighborhood are just a few of the historic districts surrounding downtown.

Old houses not your thing?  There are currently at least 16 housing projects planned for the downtown area.  From high end high rise condo’s and lofts to affordable housing.  Living in a nice new residence can be a reality in downtown Tucson.
